Zabeel captures Aust-NZ broodmare double

Zabeel has added two new premierships to his long list of achievements by winning the Australia and New Zealand Broodmare sire titles for 2011-12.

Collectively, his daughters produced the winner of AUD 12.53 million last season which was around AUD 1.27 million clear of his closest rival Danehill.

Zabeel’s daughters produced 14 individual black type winners in Australia and collectively they won 21 stakes races headed by the G1 winners Atlantic Jewel, Invest and Southern Speed.

Zabeel has won 15 Dewar Awards (Australia & NZ earnings combined), 2 Australian Stallion Premierships and 4 New Zealand Stallion Premierships.

In the 47 years since Summertime won the first Dewar Trophy, no other stallion comes close to Zabeel’s 15 victories.  His own sire Sir Tristram is next best with 9 followed by Le Filou, Oncidium and Pakistan with 3 each.

Zabeelionaire’s win in the South Australian Derby in May provided Zabeel with his 42nd individual Group 1 winner, just three shy of his own sire Sir Tristram’s record.

Zabeel’s first crop foaled in 1992 included champion galloper Octagonal and he sired another Australian Horse of the Year in 1993 with Might And Power.

Now aged 26, he will serve a restricted book at Cambridge Stud this year for a $NZ100,000 fee.
