Winning postcard from Pipers

Lex and Shirley Piper’s recent holiday on the eastern seaboard tied in perfectly with the winning run of their homebred speedball Kencella.

The Perth couple were on course to watch Kencella claim the first leg of a Rosehill double over 1100 metres on January 4.  And they cheered him home to another record-breaking victory in the TAB Hcp last Saturday.

In between those wins, the Pipers travelled to the Gold Coast where their Street Sense – Danza Doll colt made $75,000 at the Magic Millions.

Kencella (4g Exceed And Excel – Kentiara by Metal Storm) set a new class-record of 63.41s last month and he went even faster in the second-leg when clocking 63.28s by win by two lengths untouched.

“He bounced out in front and then came straight back underneath me,” winning jockey Jim Cassidy said on Saturday.  “He relaxed and then let down like a good horse in the straight.”

Kencella was heavily backed into $2.40 and favourite punters headed for the pay-out queue when he was still in command at the furlong.  The flying chestnut likes his runs spaced and trainer John O’Shea would love to pick up a open sprint with him before taking over the reins at Darley in April.

The Pipers are selling a yearling from his dam’s three-quarter sister at the Perth Magic Millions in a fortnight.  The Oratorio – Bonny Belle (Metal Storm) colt is being sold through the Mungrup Stud draft as Lot 25 on February 18.
