Whobegotyou wins first leg of NZB Caulfield Championship

Whobegotyou drew first blood in the inaugural NZ Bloodstock Caulfield Spring WFA Championship with a big finish in the G2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.

Whobegotyou (Street Cry) sent out a warning to his Cox Plate rivals with a customary big race finish in the first leg of NZB Spring Championship.  With jockey Damien Oliver aboard, Whobegotyou defeated Lights of Heaven (Zabeel) and Prince Obama (Clangalang).

The Mark Kavanagh trained gelding had finished second to Predatory Pricer in the 2009 edition of the race.

Whobegotyou is currently a $7 favourite for the G1 Cox Plate and Kavanagh will now aim him towards the G2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Mooney Valley on September 10.  And Kavanagh is not ruling out a return to Caulfield and the Spring WFA Championship with the G1 Underwood Stakes and G1 Caulfield Stakes also on the cards.

The Peter Moody trained Lights of Heaven didn’t get any favours in running but showed that she is without doubt a heavyweight spring contender.  The four-year-old daughter of Zabeel is the current $7.50 favourite for the G1 Caulfield Cup.

The next race in the Spring Weight-for-Age Championship is the G2 NZB Memsie Stakes (1400m) on August 27.
