The $100,000 Lonhro Plate at Warwick Farm on Saturday didn’t carry black type but it did draw a pretty serious field of juveniles headed by Whittington.
The Gai Waterhouse trained colt had won the LR Breeders’ Plate at Randwick on debut and returned from a 19 week spell to finish a half-length second in the LR Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill last month.
Whittington (2c Tale of the Cat – Maha Chakr by Beautiful Crown) stripped fitter for the Lonhro Plate and was brave in beating progressive colt Va Pensiero (Stratum) by a long neck. “He’s the best colt in Sydney and is right in the Golden Slipper,” Waterhouse said. “I love these Breeders Plate winners as they invariably go on in the autumn.”
Waterhouse won the Breeders’ Plate and Golden Slipper with Sebring in 2008-09. Like Whittington, he also carried the purple and white silks of Star Thoroughbreds. Lonhro colt Pierro completed the same double for Waterhouse in 2011-12.
Whittington was a $145,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions purchase for Star Thoroughbreds manager Denise Martin from the draft of Patinack Farm. He’s from the penultimate Australian crop of former Coolmore shuttler Tale of the Cat from LR Tasmanian Oaks winner Maha Chakri.
Whittington firmed into the fifth line of betting at $17 for the G1 Golden Slipper on April 6.
