Former NZ based sire Spartacus will stand his first Australian season at Cangon Stud in the Hunter Valley this year.
Spartacus (Ire) originally shuttled from Coolmore Stud to The Oaks in Cambridge in 2004. The Oaks owner Dick Karreman bought him outright in partnership with Sir Patrick Hogan and Peter and Petrea Vela in January 2008.
He was New Zealand’s champion first-season sire in 2007-08 and champion second-season sire in 2008-09 and his current stats are 60 winners of 126 races in Australia and NZ. His only Kiwi bred stakes winner has been Spare A Fortune (G3 Marton Metric Mile).
Spartacus (Danehill – Teslemi by Ogygian) was a G1 winner of the Irish Phoenix Stakes and Italian Gran Criterium. He’s a brother of G1 Hong Kong Derby winner and one-time shuttler Johan Cruyff.
Cangon Stud owner Jaime Mackay will stand Spartacus for a $5,500 (inc gst) fee in 2012. The Dungog property is also home to Nothin Leica Dane (Danehill), Recapitalize (Royal Academy) and Sea Battle (Quest for Fame).
