Trans Tasman double for Savabeel

Savabeel notched another stakes winning double on Saturday with NZ bred gallopers Brambles (Doomben) and Fromelles (Arawa Park).

Savabeel has now sired 17 stakes winners.  Brambles put in a determined display to win the G3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben.  The colt jumped well and enjoyed a handy rails run in transit before fighting back in the straight to beat the fast finishing Margins (Parameter) by a head.

Brambles (3g Savabeel – Prickle by Pins) will now be aimed at the G1 Queensland Derby (2400m) by trainer Peter Moody.  He was bred by Celia Crawshaw and was purchased from Waikato Stud at the NZB 2010 Karaka Premier Sale for $100,000.

Moody purchased his younger brother at this year’s Karaka Premier Sale for $110,000.

Fromelles proved a class above her rivals in the G3 Rotorua Cup (2200m) on Saturday.  Jumping well for jockey Lisa Allpress, she drifted back before making up many lengths in an impressive performance.

Fromelles (5m Savabeel – Unearthed by Felix The Cat) won at Trentham in March and was then unlucky in the Listed NZB Insurance Breeders’ Stakes after being blocked for a run in the straight.

Offered by Shelby Park at the 2008 NZB Karaka Select yearling sale, she has now won over $100,000 in stakes.

Fromelles is trained by John Sargent who currently heads the New Zealand premiership with 85 race wins.  He’s 20 wins clear of second placed Kevin Myers.
