Melbourne visitor Thy brought up a black-type double for Waikato Stud’s champion sire O’Reilly in the LR Aspiration Quality (1600m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
Thy (4m O’Reilly – A Star Affair by Star Way) is trained by Peter Moody for Waikato studmaster Garry Chittick and she will be set for the G1 BMW – Sydney Cup double. “She needs it even further,” jockey Luke Nolen said after the mare surged home to score in a three-way finish from Crafty Irna (Starcraft) and Aliyana Tilde (Snitzel). “She’s a little bit dour and is open to improvement.”
Her dam A Star Affair was a G2 winner of the Travis Stakes at Te Rapa in 2003. At stud she has foaled winners in Australia (Solid Billing by Rock of Gibraltar), Japan (Earth’s Gravity by Galileo) and South Africa (Galileo’s Galaxy by Galileo).
Earlier in the day at Trentham, O’Fille put paid to a competitive field in the G3 Cuddle Stakes. Wanganui trainer Wayne Marshment said the mare will head to the Travis Stakes before a winter spell.
O’Fille (5m O’Reilly – La Fille by Grosvenor) was coming back to 1600m after an unplaced effort in the Wellington Cup (2400m). “You can do that with good horses – you can’t with the slow ones,” Marshment said. “She was unlucky in the Cup but you’ve got to carry on. We’re lucky the owners have got plenty of patience.”
O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) has now sired 65 stakes winners of 124 black-type races. His star colt Shamexpress captured Australia’s premier sprint in the G1 Newmarket Hcp (1200m) at Flemington last Saturday.
Chittick has announced O’Reilly, now a rising 20 year-old, will stand for a $60,000 service fee in 2013.
