Tough win in Tasmanian Newmarket

Armidale Stud’s reputation for producing top class gallopers was further enhanced when Black ‘N’ Tough scored an impressive win in the LR Newmarket Hcp (1200m) at Mowbray on Wednesday evening.

At her first start back from a long spell, the mare jumped quickly but was caught three deep outside the leaders for the entire race.  Jockey Brendan McCoull asked the question at the 200m mark and the mare responded quickly taking the lead and going away to win by almost two lengths.

Born and reared at Armidale Stud, the daughter of Tough Speed was leased on behalf of owner-breeder Tony Shadforth to Chris and Sharon Wickham.

The Wickhams also leased Group 3 winning mare Rebel Bride from Armidale.

Black ‘N’ Tough (5m Tough Speed – Black Cent by Curravilla) is lightly raced having won 12 of her 18 starts for earnings of $208,000.  She looks a real chance in the G3 Vamos Stakes and G3 Bow Mistress Stakes coming up over the summer carnivals when Rebel Bride will be one of her main local dangers.

Wednesday night’s black-type victory, and a Melbourne metro win last season, ensures she has substantial residual broodmare value.

Black ‘N’ Tough is by successful Armidale stallion Tough Speed and is the last foal from Shadforth’s good mare Black Cent.  She produced several other winners including Speed Control, Luluanna and Mr Buttkicka.

Luluanna is at Armidale and currently has a lovely three-quarter brother to Black ‘N’ Tough at foot.  She has been served by Armidale’s new sire Needs Further this season.

The Newmarket win capped off a highly successful month for Armidale Stud as both Queenstown (Stratum) and Like A Carousel (Helike) were stakes placed over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Queenstown was purchased by Star Thoroughbreds from the Armidale draft at the Magic Millions for $60,000.  She earned black-type in the G2 Matriach Stakes and G2 Zipping Classic.  Trainer Gai Waterhouse intends to set the mare for some of the better staying races over the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Queenstown’s dam Regal Heights has a cracking Ladoni colt at foot and has also been served by Needs Further (Encosta de Lago) this season.
