Tonic just tentative for Golden Rose

Redoute’s Choice three year-old Just the Tonic has firmed into $15 for the G1 Golden Rose on September 10, however, he’s not a certain starter according to trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Just the Tonic (3g Redoute’s Choice – Platonic by Nassipour) staked his claim for the million-dollar event with a resounding victory over Redoute’s Choice colt Rekindled Alliance in the Sealy Posturepedic Hcp (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.  It was his second win in two starts this month.

“I’m not saying he will and I’m not saying he won’t run in the Golden Rose,” Waterhouse said.  “He has taken a while to come to hand and hasn’t had the grounding of the other horses.”

A graduate of Baramul Stud, Just the Tonic was purchased by Waterhouse for $400,000 at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  Earlier this year she bought his three quarter brother by Flying Spur for $150,000 at the Gold Coast.

When Just the Tonic had won on debut at Canterbury on August 3, Waterhouse revealed the stable had always held him in high regard.  “He lowered and really round the line,” Waterhouse said.  “That’s the sign of a very good horse.”

Just the Tonic was bred by Gerry Harvey and is by champion Arrowfield Stud sire Redoute’s Choice.  His dam Platonic won in Sydney and Brisbane and she is a half sister to stakes winners Shovhog and Shovoff.

Just the Tonic is her seventh winner and the best of them to date has been G3 AJC Frank Packer Plate winner Carnegie House.

Platonic is a half sister to stakes winners Shovhog and Shovoff.  Baramul has her Redoute’s Choice colt catalogued for the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
