Tonic cruises home at Canterbury

Gai Waterhouse predicted a big future for Just the Tonic following an impressive debut over 1200m at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Just the Tonic was sent out an even-money favourite in the Rosehill Event Centre Maiden (1200m) after a strong barrier trial win at Randwick.  He cruised along at the head of the field and quickened nicely in the straight to win by more two lengths from Isle Be Ready (Perfectly Ready) and The Firehouse (Not A Single Doubt).

“I like it when the other horse came to him and Nash just gave him a little slap and he lowered and really round the line,” Waterhouse said.  “That is the sign of a very good horse.  We’ve always had an opinion of him.”

Just the Tonic (3g Redoute’s Choice – Platonic by Nassipour) was purchased by Waterhouse for $400,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.  He was bred by Gerry Harvey and sold through the Baramul Stud.

Waterhouse also bought his three quarter brother by Flying Spur for $150,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions.

By champion Arrowfield Stud based sire Redoute’s Choice, Just the Tonic is the seventh winner from as many to race for Platonic.  The best of them has been G3 AJC Frank Packer Plate winner Carnegie House.

Platonic won in Sydney and Brisbane and is a half sister to stakes winners Shovhog and Shovoff.
