The Quarterback suited in Sandown Guineas

Darley can continue its winning run at the Melbourne spring carnival when The Quarterback steps out in the G2 Sandown Guineas at Caulfield on Saturday week, November 16.

The Quarterback is a first-crop son of Street Boss (USA) who stands at Darley’s Victorian base at Northwood Lodge in Seymour.  A Group 1 winning son of Street Cry, he is available for an $11,000 (inc gst) service fee.

The Quarterback (3g Street Boss – Soorena by Encosta De Lago) is unbeaten this season after two very impressive Super VOBIS victories at Bairnsdale and Sale.  “He has got a bit of a habit of missing the start,” jockey Matt Allen said at Sale.  “But he’s got an electric turn of foot and lets down with ease.

“He has a bit of a look around when he gets to the front and will be even better when he has something to chase.  He’s a very relaxed, laid-back sort of horse and will be well suited over the mile of the Sandown Guineas.”

The Quarterback was a $120,000 buy at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.  He was bred by Gilgai Farm’s Rick Jamieson and is a half-brother to Group 2 winner Philippi.

Griffiths prepares him for Hayden Allen , John Armstrong , Sunil Dhupelia, Shane Doyle, Ross Dunwoody, Richard Gudykunst, Tim Ivers, Oliver Kysela, Aaron Lamshed, Deane Lester, Paul Miall, Craig Pearce, John Schuijers and Austin Miller.

“I trained his grand dam Suraya and she was a metropolitan winner,” Griffiths recalled.  “He’s an August foal and was a smashing looking colt at the yearling sales.”
