Mezmaar chalked up the second win for Darley stallion Teofilo at Haydock on Friday evening.  The Barry Hills trained colt looked a more than useful type on debut for owner Sheikh Hamdan.

Mezmaar (2c Teofilo – Bay Tree by Daylami) tracked the leaders and was pushed out to score by two lengths in the British Stallion Studs Stakes (1200m).  It was the third time Hills had won the same race in last six years.

His star filly Spinning Queen (Spinning World) won it in 2005 and the following year she blitzed the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes by nine lengths.

Rerouted (Stormy Atlantic) won last year’s edition and then added the G3 Somerville Stakes at Newmarket in September.  Hills has him nominated for the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 14.

Teofilo made a perfect start to his stud career when Parish Hall won at Leopardstown in April.  

Teofilo (Galileo) was trained by Jim Bolger during an undefeated juvenile campaign in 2006.  He is bred on the same Danehill cross as this year’s European classic winners Frankel, Roderic O’Connor and Golden Lilac.

His Haydock winner was bred by Denford Stud and was a 120,000gns buy at the Tattersalls yearling sale in October 2010.  Mezmaar’s dam Bay Tree was a Listed winner of the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket and she is a half-sister to G1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner Tante Rose (Barathea).

Second dam My Branch (Distant Relative) was a Listed winner for Hills and she was also G1 placed in the 1996 Irish 1000 Guineas.

Teofilo has covered over 200 mares in the last two seasons shuttling to Darley Kelvinside at a $22,000 fee.
