Stockwell returns to sale arena in 2017

Victoria’s historic Stockwell will be back in the vendor box at the next round of yearling sales after an absence of more than 20 years.

The rebranded Stockwell Thoroughbreds, under the management of Mike and Brodie Becker, will have consignments at several yearling sales venues in the New Year.  “We will offer select drafts in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney Classic Sales under the Stockwell banner,” said Mike Becker.

“We have a wonderful facility for preparing yearlings as has been evidenced by our results in the past few years under the Emirates Park banner.

“We have the facility and experience so owners can be assured of the best care of their yearlings.  And we still have spaces for owners looking for preparation of their yearlings for next year.

“In addition, we do not charge a commission on sales as we feel owners already face enough risks and costs in getting good sales results.”

Stockwell rode to prominence with the progeny of the great Showdown and regularly topped Melbourne yearling sales in the 1970s.  Owner Ken Cox never took his yearlings to interstate sales and that helped underpin the Victorian breeding industry.

“Our own draft for Melbourne next year will be headlined by the Fastnet Rock half-brother to Vain Stakes winner Get the Nod, ” Becker said.  “We also have a very nice Dream Ahead filly and we are thrilled with the start he has made with his first crop runners.”

Stockwell Thoroughbreds is currently standing first season sire Rock Sturdy, a Group 2 winning son of Fastnet Rock who is emerging rapidly as a successful sire of sires with his sons Hinchinbrook and Smart Missile taking Australian honours in the first and second season categories in 2015-16.
