Steel Zip stitch-up in Members Cup

Deagon trainer Pat Duff has designs on feature races in NSW with his classy sprinter-miler Steel Zip.  The in-form gelding earned a trip south after winning the LR Members Cup (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Steel Zip (4g Canadian Silver – Zip by Cossack Warrior) holds an entry for the G1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick on April 21.  “We won’t make any other plans until he runs in the Newmarket Handicap at Newcastle,” Duff said.  “I just hope the weather down there stays as wet as it has lately.”

Steel Zip has now landed three Listed races following the 2011 Queensland Day Stakes at Doomben and the 2012 Sunshine Coast Cup at Caloundra.  All up, he has won 5 races in 21 starts for earnings of $330,500.

“I bought him on speck for just $13,000 at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions,” Duff recalled.  “But when I took him home there wasn’t much interest so I kept a share myself.”

Steel Zip is a son of former champion Lyndhurst Stud stallion Canadian Silver (Geiger Counter) who died in April 2008.  His dam Zip and second dam Plenty of Polish (Boysie Boy) both won at Eagle Farm.  Plenty of Polish is a sister to G1 VATC Oakleigh Plate winner Harpagus.
