Startsmeup in Top 40 for Danzero

Gold Coast based Glenn Heran celebrated his first black-type success as an owner-breeder when Startsmeup prevailed in a spectacular finish to the G3 George Moore Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

Startsmeup (5g Danzero – Bluevien by Bluebird) burst through a gap in the straight to win in a blanket finish from Phelan Ready, Morning Captain and Audacious Spirit.  The gelding has earned over $700,000 for Heran and his brothers Martin and Stephen and will now head to the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup on January 12.

“We’ve been in horses for about 20 years and have five nice mares,” Heran said.  “I like breeding, it’s like having a punt but it’s an educated gamble.  You follow trends in the game, see what works and what doesn’t, and you pitch yourself against other people’s ideas.”

Startsmeup is the sixth stakes-winning graduate for the Arrowfield & Bellerive Studs partnership this season alone, and one of 65 stakes performers offered under the two banners since 2007.

Bellerive Stud presented Startsmeup on behalf of the Heran brothers at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions but he was passed in at $47,500.  “I said he will make ten times that money on the racetrack, so we kept him,” Heran recalled.

Startsmeup has a marvellous record at the Magic Millions.  He was outstanding fifth from a wide draw in the 2010 2YO Classic won by Military Rose and returned a year later to split Torio’s Quest and Top Drop in the Magic Millions Guineas.

Trainer Gillian Heinrich brought him back for a crack at the 2012 Magic Millions Cup and he was beaten a half-length by Spirit of Boom.  “Gillian has done a fantastic job with our horse,” Heran continued.  “I’ve admired her ever since she beat us in the Magic Millions with Military Rose.  She’s a very astute trainer.”

Startsmeup is the 40th stakes winner for Arrowfield – Rosemount sire Danzero and he is a half-brother to the winners Surf’s Up (Flying Spur) and Gorgonzola (Hussonet).  Their dam Bluevien has a 2YO filly by named Miss Challenger (Flying Spur) in training with John Sadler and the mare is now in foal to Commands.
