The Ecurie des Monceaux consignment led Arqana’s August yearling sale for the second day running on Sunday.
The last of seven lots by Sea the Stars in the catalogue led the way at 1.20 million euros to the bid of Mandore International Agency. The session topping gray colt is the first foal out of G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Alpine Rose (Linamix).
Alpine Rose was a 550,000 euros buy out of The Aga Khan’s draft at the 2008 Arqana December Sale. “We really wanted this colt,” MIA director Nicolas de Watrigant said after outlasting David Redvers, John Ferguson and Angus Gold. He bought for the colt for Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani of Qatar.
“He is an exceptional looking horse and has the pedigree to be a potential sire. He also seems to have a lovely temperament and we saw him three or four times and liked him a little bit more every time.”
Ecurie des Monceaux topped Day 1 with a Galileo filly that cost 1.10 million euros.
Select Session 1 ended after two sessions with an average of 157,565 euros which was up 8% on 2011. The median of 110,000 euros fell by 4%. Arqana’s Select Session 2 continues on Monday and Tuesday.
