Eureka Stud continued its superb run of results this season when Teardrop Rock dug deep to win the Queen’s Park Hcp (1550m) at Randwick on Wednesday.
Teardrop Rock (3f Fastnet Rock – Satin ‘n’ Silk by Zabeel) was a member of Eureka Stud’s draft at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions and she took the eye of Gai Waterhouse and Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds.
The Fastnet Rock filly changed hands for $150,000 and she looks a bargain after completing a hat-trick over Thrillers (Lonhro) and Wakanda (Dubawi) yesterday. Her only defeat was on debut when she was runner-up at Randwick on Melbourne Cup day.
“The pressure was on the whole way,” winning jockey Nash Rawiller said. “To her credit, she was very professional and got the job done well. That’s all you can ask.”
Eureka Stud’s Colin and Scott McAlpine have enjoyed a winning ride with their first-season sire Red Dazzler this season. The Red Ransom horse was a G1 winner of the MRC Toorak Hcp and he hit the ground running with early-season winners Dazzling Kind and Daytime Dazzler.
The McAlpines are firing on another front with the homebred half-brothers Temple Of Boom (Piccolo) and Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo). Their dam Temple Spirit (Special Dane) won 8 races for the McAlpine family before retiring to stud.
Toowoomba trainer Tony Gollan has nominated Temple Of Boom first-up in the Open Sprint at Doomben this Saturday. He is a last start winner of the Listed Swisse Stakes at Flemington on VRC Oaks day.
The McAlpines kept a share in Temple Of Boom after he sold for $40,000 at the 2008 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale. Backing their own product proved a wise decision after the gelding won the 2009 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Prelude on debut. The Flemington win last month sent his earnings soaring past $450,000.
Father and son stepped up to the plate again at the 2009 QTIS 600 Yearling Sale when Bryan Guy paid $90,000 for Spirit Of Boom. Their share paid for itself when he won the 2010 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Prelude and he added a Listed victory in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic in April. His bank balance is over $255,000.
Guy has nominated Spirit Of Boom to resume in the Listed Gold Edition Plate at Doomben this Saturday. His goal this prep will be the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy at the Gold Coast on January 15.
Connections of Teardrop Rock have nominated their filly for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in January and they also have the option of sending her south for the Tasmania Oaks.
“She’s out of a good Zabeel mare and I think she’d make a lovely Oaks filly,” Denise Martin said yesterday. “As a young horse she was very immature but she’s improving all the time – she’s a beauty.”
