St Nicholas Abbey succumbs to colic

Coolmore Stud star St Nicholas Abbey has died due to complications from colic at Fethard Equine Hospital in Ireland.

St Nicholas Abbey (Montjeu) fractured his right foreleg while training at Ballydoyle in July.  He developed laminitis after surgery, however, Coolmore issued a positive bulletin on his chances for survival in December.

“The laminitis was resolving very well and the fracture had healed better than expected,” Coolmore stated on Wednesday.  “Regretfully, St Nicholas Abbey lost his brave battle after suffering a colic attack on Tuesday morning.”

St Nicholas Abbey was a Group 1 winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup (three times), Racing Post Trophy and Dubai Sheema Classic.

Coolmore thanked all the staff at Fethard Equine Hospital and the multitude of well-wishers for the cards and messages of support for St Nicholas Abbey.  He will be buried at Coolmore.
