Spendthrift Farm scored with class colt Spirit And Fire at Canterbury last Wednesday and the Romsey nursery doubled up with explosive winner Into Orbit at Pakenham on Tuesday.
Into Orbit turned a 1100m maiden into a procession bolting in by more than 4 lengths on debut from front-running filly La Bandita. “Spendthrift has another very nice horse on its hands,” jockey Dwayne Dunn said back in the enclosure. “He steadied out of the gates but when I gave him a bang he overdid it and raced up outside the leader.
“He switched off and relaxed before I asked him for an effort in the straight. He lowered down, stuck his head out and really found the line. There’s better races in store for this horse!”
Into Orbit (Northern Meteor) is trained by Team Hawkes and cost $350,000 at the 2015 Inglis Easter yearling sale. His dam Rockin Babe (Rock of Gibraltar) is a half-sister to leading Queensland stallion Hidden Dragon.
Spirit And Fire (More Than Ready) is also with Team Hawkes and both colts are part of an exciting crop of promising three year-olds for Spendthrift. “They’re a big operation and have some good ones coming through,” Dunn added. “I rode another one of their winners Ameristralia at Bendigo last week.”
Into Orbit holds entries for the all the spring features. “He’s just been doing it under his own steam until now and that win will give him more confidence going forward. He’s a sensational looking individual and is well above Saturday class!”
Spendthrift Farm hosts its stallion parades at Romsey this Friday at 3pm and this Saturday at Noon. Its roster this year comprises Hampton Court, Jimmy Creed (USA) and Warrior’s Reward (USA).
