Special filly by More Than Ready

More Than Ready filly Equanimity gave her owner-breeder Sir Peter Vela a special thrill at Arawa Park in Rotarua on Monday.

Equanimity (3f More Than Ready – Insouciant by Keeper) carried her breeder’s famous blue and white hooped silks to a debut victory in the Windsor Karaka Yearlings Maiden (1230m).  She charged down the outside to defeat Buckwild by next to two lengths.

The Vinery champion sired her from 2008 NZ Filly Of The Year Insouciant.  “Sir Peter raced the dam and this is her first foal,” racing manager Gary Cossey said.  “She has always been very special to him.”

Insouciant was prepared by Mark Walker at Te Akau Stables in Matamata and her filly is based at the same establishment although Jason Bridgman is now in charge.

Equanimity was too immature to follow her dam on the NZ Bloodstock Filly Of The Year trail.  “She needed a bit more time,” Bridgman said.  “She would need to jump straight to 1600m to get into the series now and that would be too much.  But she could be ready for the NZ Airfreight Stakes in March.”

Equanimity is the latest More Than Ready winner over a Danehill line mare.  Her damsire is Danehill’s G1 Goodwood Hcp winner Keeper who stands at Cambridge Stud.

The More Than Ready – Danehill line cross is represented by some outstanding yearlings at the Gold Coast Magic Millions this week.

Home base Vinery Stud has a half-brother to G1 WATC Derby winner Grand Journey (Lot 431) while Baramul Stud’s draft includes colts from G1 AJC Flight Stakes winner Cheeky Choice (Lot 270) and G2 Yallambee Classic winner Magically (Lot 543).
