Spark scores timely victory at Ascot

Rio Spark’s impressive victory at Ascot was a perfectly timed result leading into the Perth Magic Millions yearling sale.

The Neville Parnham trained colt had broken his maiden at Pinjarra last month and he railed up to win the Ron Sullivan 75th Birthday Handicap in town on Saturday.

Rio Spark (3c Oratorio – Magic Spark by Canny Lad) cost $50,000 from the Mungrup draft at the 2010 Perth Magic Millions and, with Westspeed bonuses attached, his connections are already in the black.

Mungrup studmaster Gray Williamson will offer his Danehill Express half-brother as Lot 437 at the Perth Magic Millions starting on February 14.

Mungrup based sire Oratorio (Aus) has 47 yearlings catalogued for the 2012 Perth Magic Millions.  The stakes winning son of Stravinsky has sired 68 winners of 161 races in his first three crops.  They have saluted at a 54% strike-rate.

Rio Spark is the second winner for Magic Spark following Right Ring miler Chaddie.  The mare is a half-sister to the Bryan Guy trained Major Victory (Archregent) who was a stakes winning sprinter in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
