Smokey Eyes in Queensland Hall of Fame

Legendary Lyndhurst Stud sire Smokey Eyes (Ire) has been inducted into Racing Queensland’s Hall of Fame.

Smokey Eyes (Stardust) was Australia’s champion sire in the winners’ category 6 times.  He was also Queensland’s leading sire 15 times.

Originally based in Victoria, he was purchased by Lyndhurst owners Percy and Ted Kruger in 1957 and went on to sire 31 stakes winners headed by Group 1 stars Eye Liner, New Statesman and Charlton Boy.

Smokey Eyes dominated the Queensland Oaks winning with Aspalita (1963), Eye Shadow (1964), Kulali (1965) and Bright Shadow (1968).  His top-class filly Intrepid Clipper won the 1969 Queensland Derby but could only finish third in the Queensland Oaks.  Her Derby win was the first Group 1 for Larry Olsen.

Smokey Eyes was pensioned in 1972 when he was rising 26.  His mares went on to foal over 1000 individual winners and, arguably, the best of the them was Range View Stud mare Salma.

Mated with Range View champion Better Boy, she foaled the G1 winners Pterylaw (Doomben 10,000) and Tolerance (Blue Diamond Stakes).  Their sister Prujoy foaled 1979 Queensland Oaks winner Prunella (Convamore).
