New Sunspeed sire Lucky Unicorn added another notch to his Hong Kong strike-rate when Smart Guy won the Yung Shue O Hcp (2000m) on Monday.
Smart Guy (4g Lucky Unicorn – Dawn Run by Zabeel) had been ridden for speed earlier in his career, however, jockey Howard Cheng decided to ride him more patiently when stepping up in distance at Sha Tin. “I needed him to relax going up to 2000 metres for the first time,” Cheng explained. “I took him back to last and he finished off well. He got held up early in the straight but that might have even helped him.”
Originally named Pat’s Trick, he won at Ellerslie in March 2011 for trainer Bruce Wallace before transferring to Hong Kong. He’s now under the care of Peter Ho for owner Jimmy Chung Kwok Man.
Smart Guy (NZ) is the last foal of Dawn Run and is a younger half-brother to Group winners Beat The Fade (Maroof) and Dawn Till Dusk (Manntari).
Lucky Unicorn (Redoute’s Choice) has four-time winner Flying Unicorn flying the flag in Hong Kong. He has earned the equivalent of AUD 335,325 and signalled another victory isn’t far away when finishing second at Happy Valley last month.
Lucky Unicorn has just transferred from Cambridge Stud to Westbury Park in Western Australia. “He’s a stakes winning son of Redoute’s Choice and his runners will really appreciate racing on top of the ground in Perth.” Westbury studmaster Phil Ibbotson said. “We will stand him at a 4,400 (inc gst) service fee to ensure he has a good book first-up.”
