Exciting two-year-old Snitzerland set up a clash with star filly Samaready after a dominant performance in G3 VRC Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.
Snitzerland (2f Snitzel – Monte Rosa by Fraar) put herself in contention for the Golden Slipper while leading home a Snitzel quinella ahead of Lindsay Park filly Extreme Impact. “I’m not that frightened of Samaready,” trainer Gerald Ryan said. “The Slipper has always been our aim, right since she had her first gallop.”
Snitzerland and last-start G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready will clash in the G2 Reisling Stakes at Rosehill on March 24 in the final lead-up to the G1 Golden Slipper on April 7.
Samaready (More Than Ready) is the pre-post Golden Slipper favourite ahead of All Too Hard ($6.50), Pierro ($6.50), Raceway ($7.50), No Looking Back ($9) and Snitzerland ($11).
Snitzerland finished a half-head second to Applegate on debut in the Listed VRC Ottawa Stakes in November before returning for a runaway victory in the Inglis Premier at Mornington last month. “She’s got gate speed, she switches off, she relaxes and then she quickens,” Ryan added after his filly scored by almost three lengths at headquarters. “I’ve just got to try and hold her together now for another month.”
Snitzerland is raced by Neil Werrett and he’s also in champion mare Black Caviar. Another part-owner Steve McCann has a slice of Samaready under the Encompass Bloodstock banner.
The Snitzel filly was bred by Arrowfield Stud and sold from Bellerive Stud’s draft for $125,000 at the 2011 Melbourne Premier yearling sale. Arrowfield has catalogued 32 yearlings for the 2012 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from April 10 to 12.
Snitzerland is from an unraced sister to G3 winner Nina Haraka and comes from the Tennessee family of stakes winning fillies. Her dam Monte Rosa has already foaled the winners Red Dress Marley (Hussonet), Akmal (Flying Spur) and Deleque (French Deputy).
Snitzel stands alongside his own sire Redoute’s Choice at Arrowfield for a $27,500 service fee.
