Singapore rewards Rocket Man

Viscount’s star galloper Rocket Man was named Champion Older Horse and Champion Sprinter at the 2012 Singapore Horse of the Year awards on Thursday evening.

Rocket Man (7g Viscount – Macrosa by Mr McGinty) had three starts last year winning the Kranji Stakes in March before venturing to the Gulf where he finished second in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen..  He returned home to capture a fourth straight G1 Lion City Cup before injury robbed him of a chance of contesting the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint.

Rocket Man relinquished his 2011 Singapore Horse of the Year crown to NZ bred gelding Super Easy but he was still rated the third best sprinter in the world last year.  Unbeaten mare Black Caviar headed the rankings at 130 followed by Hay List (125), Rocket Man (122), Atlantic Jewel (122) and Sepoy (122).

Viscount stands for a $7,700 (inc gst) service fee at Oakland Park at North Jindong in Western Australia.

Champion galloper Northerly called Oakland Park home before his death last year and other stakes winners off the property include Marasco (Makybe Diva Stakes), Shirazamatazz (WA Derby), Covertly (Railway Stakes) and Roman Time (Karrakatta Plate).

Viscount was the Champion 2YO of his generation and he returned at three to win the G1 George Main Stakes at Randwick before a career-high third to Northerly and Sunline in a pulsating finish to the 2001 W S Cox Plate.

Oakland Park owner Neville Duncan purchased Viscount (Quest For Fame) in 2008 and has entered two of his yearlings for next month’s Perth Magic Millions.
