Sequalo stocks rise for Magic Millions Classic

Missy Longstocking will lead the home defence for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on January 12.

The Sequalo filly will go into the $2 million feature with an undefeated record that stretched to four in the G3 B J McLachlan Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.  Bookmakers have priced the Queensland youngster at $12 for the 2YO Classic behind interstate favourites Assail and Clevadude.

Missy Longstocking (2f Sequalo – Linyanti by Thunder Gulch) had won by six lengths at Toowoomba on debut and by seven lengths at Eagle Farm before stepping up to a Listed victory in the Calaway Gal Stakes back at Eagle Farm on December 15.

Trainer Liam Birchley sent flying filly Paprika in the 2009 Magic Millions Classic with an unbeaten record but she came up short when beaten a neck by Phelan Ready.  “They are different types of horses but Missy Longstocking gets the job done,” he said.  “And she can handle being ridden anywhere in the field.”

Missy Longstocking is by prolific winner-getter Sequalo who stands at Lyndhurst Stud.  His star sprinter Bold Glance has won two stakes races at Eagle Farm but his richest pay-day was in the $330,000 Magic Millions Cup in 2011.

Owner Judith Clairs bought the Bruce McLachlan Stakes winner as a foal for $7,500 at the 2011 Magic Millions National Sale.  Her dam is from a half-sister to WATC Karrakatta Plate winner Highpak (Haulpak).

Winning jockey Damian Browne is confident Missy Longstocking has more improvement to come.  “She was able to pick them up pretty easily when I went full bore in the straight,” he said.  “And I think Liam has left a little bit to work on for the grand final in a fortnight.”
