Scenic Lodge announces fees for 2013

Scenic Lodge has announced its fees for 2013 on the back of another successful season for Blackfriars.

Blackfriars (Danehill) will stand for a $20,000 (plus gst) service fee and Universal Ruler (Scenic) for $3,500 (plus gst).

Blackfriars is set to claim his third straight Western Australian sires’ premiership.  He has established a commanding $1.17 million lead over Mosayter and Oratorio (Aus) with 16 weeks of this season remaining.

Scenic Lodge General Manager Jeremy Smith is mindful to do everything possible to prolong his career.

“Blackfriars is now achieving similar domination in Western Australia that our former champion sire Scenic enjoyed,” Scenic Lodge general manager Jeremy Smith said.  “His progeny love our conditions and tracks and he is now clearly regarded throughout the industry as the stand-out stallion in Western Australia.

“Blackfriars is turning 17 this year and we are mindful of doing everything possible to prolong his career,” Smith continued.  “He’s still in his prime with excellent fertility but will reduce his workload with a reduced book from the 180 he served last year.  Hopefully, reducing his workload may help preserve him a bit longer.

“Top class proven stallions don’t come around very often and we are very fortunate to stand a stallion like Blackfriars here in Western Australia.

Universal Ruler will stand his fourth season at a reduced fee at Scenic Lodge.  “His first yearlings were really well-received at the Perth Magic Millions in February,” Smith added.  “They averaged $31,000 and we had so many positive comments about them from leading trainers.

“We are confident the Universal Rulers will get up and run early next season.  Traditionally, the fourth year is a tough one for any stallion because breeders are keen to see them start performing before committing again.”

The Universal Ruler syndicate has decided to slash his fee to $3,500 (plus gst) this year.  “With the quality of mares he has covered and the types he is siring, it certainly makes him great value,” Smith explained.  “Especially if they perform as two year-olds like we expect them to.”

Meanwhile, Scenic Lodge will offer (as agent) five mares in foal to either Blackfriars or Universal Ruler at Perth’s Magic Millions April Sale this Sunday, April 14.  They are by champion sires Bletchley Park, Metal Storm and Serheed.

Another member of the Scenic Lodge draft is the 3yo gelding Elestare (Lot 26).  He’s by Elvstroem and showed above average ability at the trials before one unplaced start in February.
