Scarlett Lady on course for Ranvet – BMW double

Outstanding Kiwi mare Scarlett Lady is on course for the Ranvet Stakes – BMW Stakes double at Rosehill.

Scarlett Lady (Savabeel) booked her ticket to take on Sydney’s best after a hard-fought victory in the G1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.  “She’s something very special,” trainer Graeme Rogerson said.  “We will most likely line her up in the Ranvert Stakes but the BMW is the ultimate target.”

A decision will then be made whether she takes aim at Singapore or the Brisbane carnival.  The Melbourne Cup is also on the mare’s agenda for 2012.

Saturday’s race was built as a match race between Scarlett Lady and Veyron (Thorn Park) who had beaten (King) Mufhasa in the Waikato Draught Sprint.  The Group 1 race lived up to that billing when Scarlett Lady stalked Veyron into the straight.  It was a two-horse war as the pair went stride for stride in the straight before Scarlett Lady put her nose in front on the line.

Scarlett Lady was back in G1 company after undergoing surgery following G1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield in the spring.  A bone fragment was removed from her front fetlock.

Scarlett Lady (NZ) had made a solid return to racing winning the LR Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1600m) in February and she looked every bit the talented filly that won six consecutive races including the G1 Queensland Oaks Double last season.

Scarlett Lady was bred by Steve Luey and Waikato Stud and was purchased by Max Whitby at the 2009 Premier Sale for $25,000.  Her record now reads 8 wins in 14 starts for over $750,000 in stakes.
