Sargent majors at Matamata

John Sargent was well pleased with his stable’s results on Saturday after preparing three (NZ) winners at Awapuni.

Dugan (Darci Brahma) and Maeve Davone (Iffraaj) opened their accounts early on while Cody Cat (Scardee Cat) scored impressively in the last race of the day to cap off a successful trip to the Central Districts for the Matamata trainer.

“It was a great day for the stable and very pleasing as we had planned to have a go at this meeting a few weeks ago,” said Sargent.  “The rain on the day was also a big help and all in all we are well satisfied with the result.”

Sargent was also of the belief that each of his winning trio could maintain their form over the winter months.  “I have a fair bit of time for Dugan – I think he’s finally started to mature mentally.  We will set him for the Ryder Stakes later in the winter if he keeps improving.”

Dugan (ex Snipza Gold by Pins) was a $60,000 buy from Phoenix Park at the 2012 NZB yearling sale.

“I thought Maeve Davone would be hard to beat and Cody Cat has the makings of a good middle distance horse,” Sargent added.  “He could head to the Winter Cup at Riccarton as he would get in on a light weight and I think he is good enough to be competitive if he strikes conditions to suit.”
