I Am Sam (NZ) matched the winning record of his G1 brother Hustler with a convincing victory in the Brackenfield Hunt Hcp (1400m) at Riccarton on Saturday.
The six-year-old had performed with credit the previous Saturday when a close fourth in the G3 Winter Cup and made no mistake in an easier assignment over his favourite trip.
I Am Sam (6g Al Akbar – Flush by Full On Aces) is a homebred for Jan Wilson and Della Wordley. He might struggle to reach the heights of Hustler, who won the 2002 NZ 2000 Guineas, but is now level-pegging with 9 victories each.
I Am Sam is prepared at New Plymouth by Bryce Revell, who took little credit for the gelding’s strike rate. “You work him, race him and he wins when he’s ready!” he said. “They went hard early and he got across for a soft run.”
The winner is from unraced mare Flush who is out of a half-sister to G2 AJC St Leger winner Forward Charge (Rangong).
