Rock rolls favourite in Dark Jewel Classic

Fastnet Rock stamped his authority on the current Australian sires’ premiership when Upon This Rock landed the Listed Dark Jewel Classic at Scone on Saturday.

Fastnet Rock is home and hosed for the 2011-12 title with earnings of $10.86 million this season.  He has sired 15 individual domestic stakes winners and they have claimed 29 black-type races.

Upon This Rock (3f Fastnet Rock – Joleur by Bite the Bullet) went out at $15 and upstaged her rivals with a surging finish to defeat the favourite Shannara at Scone.  “The race was run to suit her and she has come right at the right time,” Waterhouse said.  “They ran along and Kathy (O’Hara) let her find her feet and she ran home really nicely.”

Upon This Rock was bought by James Bester Bloodstock for $225,000 from the Willow Park draft at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  Waterhouse trains her for Laurie Macri who also shares in the ownership of Fastnet Rock star Atlantic Jewel.

Upon This Rock is a half-sister to stakes-winners Gaze On and Bhutane Dane.  Their dam Joleur is a half-sister to stakes-winning Fastnet Rock three year-old Amah Rock who was runner-up to Mental in the G3 BTC Classic at Doomben on Saturday.
