Things didn’t go to plan for Snitzel’s son Malavio in the Listed Civic Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday and that made his two length victory all the more remarkable.
Trainer Steve Englebrecht didn’t expect to see his gelding get so far back on the corner, however, a powerful finish had the Warwick Farm conditioner bubbling with enthusiasm. “It wasn’t the plan to settle last but he’s absolutely flying,” Englebrecht told AAP. “He’s still very green and big and gangly and may be better than I initially thought.
“Without being too optimistic, I would like to give him a freshen-up and the Villiers might be a nice race for him. I certainly think 1600 metres won’t be a problem.”
Malavio (3g Snitzel – Win Here Win There by Dehere) is the sixth stakes winner in what has been an outstanding season for Snitzel in 2011-12. The Arrowfield stallion heads the Australian third-season sires’ list and earlier this month he landed a Group 1 first thanks to high-class colt Sizzling.
Malavio is a homebred for Ottavio Galletta and is the first winner from his Randwick winner Win Here Win There. Second-dam Our Fiction (Zoffany) won the 1993 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Win Here Win There is due to foal again to Snitzel in September. Snitzel stands alongside his own sire Redoute’s Choice and is available at a $33,000 (inc gst) fee in 2012.
