Pierro claims Triple Crown

All conquering juvenile Pierro confirmed his status as one of our greatest two-year-olds with a stunning win in the G1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The Lonhro colt completed the 2YO Triple Crown having already captured the G1 Golden Slipper and G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes.  Unbeaten in six starts, Pierro heads to the paddock having earned almost $3 million for owners Greg and Donna Kolivos.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was again rolling out the superlatives after the champion colt streaked clear of his rivals.  “Outstanding, absolutely outstanding,” Waterhouse beamed from the mounting enclosure.  “It is a privilege to train a horse as a good as him.”

Pierro (2c Lonhro – Miss Right Note by Daylami) was a $115,000 buy for Musk Creek Farm owner David Kobritz as a foal before going under the hammer again for $230,000 at the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

His dam is a half sister to Octagonal stayer Laverock who was a G1 winner at Milan and Longchamp.

Regular rider Nash Rawiller is already looking towards spring targets like the G1 Caulfield Guineas in October.  “He’s a phenomenal ride and continues to raise the bar.  You can push the button then get him to come back under you at any stage of the race.”

Miss Right Note foaled a Lonhro filly last year and she was bred back to Street Cry.
