O’Reilly is on route to his third NZ sires’ premiership as well as another Dewar Stallion Trophy after Keyarna Blue (NZ) won the LR Laelia Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on Saturday.
The Waikato Stud champion has now sired 66 stakes winners and the Pat Hyland trained filly was his 13th black-type winner this season. The Dewar Trophy is awarded to the stallion with most combined prizemoney in Australia and NZ.
Keyarna Blue (3f O’Reilly – Oh Blue Angel by Semipalatinsk) had opened her winning account in a Kilmore maiden a fortnight before the trip to Adelaide. Although Saturday’s winning margin was only a half-length, she was very impressive coming with a late burst along the rails under Kiwi jockey Michael Walker.
Her dam Oh Blue Angel was a Listed winner of the VRC Great Western Hcp during the 2000 Melbourne Cup carnival. The mare died after foaling the Adelaide stakes winner in November 2009.
Little Avondale Stud sold Keyarna Blue for $66,000 at NZB’s 2011 Karaka Select Sale. Little Avondale Stud’s recent run of domestic success includes Kekova (LR Great Easter Stakes) and Xanadu (G1 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes).
