An O’Reilly colt provided the highlight of the NZB South Island 2YO & Mixed Bloodstock Sale when fetching $145,000on Friday.
Offered by Berkley Stud, the colt is a brother to 2006 NZB Southern Filly of the Year Ombre Rose (O’Reilly) and half-brother to 10-time Australian winner Crabs (Danasinga).
The strength of his dam side was one of the features that drew Mr N C Chan of Hong Kong to the colt “I liked this colt because the dam line is very strong and his sire O’Reilly is a very successful stallion in Hong Kong,” Chan said.
“He will be pre-trained in New Zealand and, depending on how he develops, I intend to send him to Hong Kong. I will be my first season with a permit in Hong Kong so I have come here to buy a few horses and I will take the best up there next year.”
Mr Chan was the leading purchaser on Friday and he also secured a Falkirk gelding for $85,000. Turnover reached more than $1.17 million at Christchurch at an average of $11,108 and a clearance rate of 72%.
The leading vendor by aggregate for the eighth year was Berkley Stud. Owners Edwina Morris and Alan Jones sold 15 horses for takings of $338,500. They were also leading vendor by average with $22,567, ahead of North Island based Phoenix Park with an average of $20,850.
