Matamata filly Miss Mossman has claimed a classic first for Mossman in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks.

Better known for siring champion sprinter Buffering and brilliant two year-old Mossfun, the Vinery stallion stretched his Group 1 winning range to 2400 metres at Trentham on Saturday.

Miss Mossman (3f Mossman – Dane Promise by Danehill) was bred in Australia by Gerry Harvey and she earned a start in the NZ Oaks after finishing second in the G3 Lowland Stakes at Hastings on March 1.

Jockey Johnathon Parkes settled the filly in the first half-dozen and had her challenging for the lead at the top of the straight.  She skipped away and was always in control to win by more than three lengths from Miss Selby (O’Reilly) and Rock Diva (Lucky Unicorn).

“We won the VRC Oaks with Kirramosa and to do it again in New Zealand is out of this world,” trainer John Sargent said.  “Johnathon was fantastic.  He rides on a long rein and that suits the stayers.”

Miss Mossman is the 28th stakes winner for Mossman and his 7th this season following Admiral, Buffering, Dothraki, Mossfun, Plucky Belle and Royal Zulu Warrior (South Africa).

Matamata owner Bruce Clothier bought her for $25,000 from the Westbury Stud draft at the 2012 NZB Select yearling sale at Karaka.  Her dam Dane Promise has foaled minor winners by More Than Ready and General Nediym in Australia while her previous foal by Mossman – Mighty Equus – has won twice in Hong Kong this season.

Second-dam Best Promise is by Harvey’s first high-profile sire Best Western and she is a sister to 1995 G1 Australian Derby winner Ivory’s Irish.

Mossman (Success Express) has three yearlings catalogued for the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in April starting with Lot 308, a chestnut filly from G1 Queensland Oaks winner Allow (Rahy).
