Adamantium ran his rivals into the ground with a barrier-to-box victory in the Standish Hcp (1200m) at Flemington on Tuesday.
Adamantium (4g Elusive City – Della Mimosa by Generous) clocked a quick 1.08.21s at headquarters to set up a Group 1 assignment in this year’s Newmarket Hcp. “He’s a dead-set six furlong horse,” trainer Danny O’Brien said. “He will get into the Newmarket with no weight and he handles the straight track brilliantly.”
The Flemington based colt had two Caulfield sprints as a spring three year-old and O’Brien considered he could stretch out to a mile. But those plans were shelved after an unplaced effort behind Pear Tart in the G2 Queensland Guineas in June.
Haunui Farm sold Adamantium for $250,000 at the 2010 NZB Select yearling sale. He was offered by Hilton Mackley through the Haunui draft and the breeder kept a share after the sale. A full brother to Adamantium has been catalogued by Haunui as Lot 100 at the NZB Premier yearling sale later this month.
Their dam Della Mimosa is a half-sister to Doomben stakes winner Pottinger (Al Hareb). She, in turn, is the dam of G2 Singapore Golden Horseshoe winner Pitstop (Zizou).
Adamantium’s yearling brother at Karaka is from the final NZ bred crop of Haunui shuttler Elusive City. He was a G1 winner of the Prix Morny and has sired 83 winners at a 60% strike rate in Australian & New Zealand.
