New Boy at Bullarook Park

Murphy’s Blu Boy will transfer to Victoria for the 2010 season.  The former boom colt will stand at Bullarook Park in Avenel after five seasons at Baerami Thoroughbreds in NSW.

Murphy’s Blu Boy (Blu Tusmani – Murphy’s Arch by Archregent) was a headline galloper in 2002-03 for Mick Hicks, a knockabout owner-trainer from the backblocks of Queensland.

A natural speedster, Murphy’s Blu Boy won his first three starts at Ipswich and Gold Coast (twice) by a combined total of 18 lengths.  He went to Melbourne and proved the Sunshine State form-line was no fluke with a 7 length demolition job in the G3 Blue Diamond Preview.

“He’s the fastest two-year-old I have ever ridden,” jockey Damien Oliver declared at Caulfield.

Sydney businessman Brian Roddy was also impressed and bought a half-share off Hicks for $800,000.  Sadly, Murphy’s Blu Boy was injured at his next start when a long odds-on favourite in the Blue Diamond Prelude won by Hammerbeam.

Subsequent surgery punctured his career although he did return as a three year-old to win the 2004 Lightning Hcp at Gosford.  He retired to stud the following year with 5 wins from 11 starts up to 1000m.

Murphy’s Blu Boy is a member of the Mr Prospector sire line through G1 winner Afleet (sire of 61 stakes winners) and G2 winner Blu Tusmani.

His dam Murphy’s Arch (Archregent) is a winning half sister to G2 winning filly I Am A Ripper and her immediate family includes G1 W S Cox Plate winner Dane Ripper.  Her latest winner is the Lindsay Park colt Dempsey (Flying Spur) who won at Geelong and Benalla during his first campaign in the spring.

Murphy’s Blu Boy opened his own account as a sire when Trust Me I’m Blonde was successful at Benalla in May.  He has since increased that tally to 6 from his first-crop and they include Sandown winner Valentine Blues and last-start Wyong winner Bluzar.

“I have always liked Murphy’s Blu Boy,” Bullarook Park studmaster Malcolm Boyd said.  “His progeny are really starting to show something and he is an impressive horse in his own right.”
