Needs Further retires to Armidale Stud

Randwick Group 3 winner Needs Further has been retired to stand at Armidale Stud in Tasmania.

The Gooree Stud homebred won 3 of his 5 starts headed by the G3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) before a joint issue curtailed his career.  Trainer Gai Waterhouse was confident she had a Group 1 horse in the making, however, after two unsuccessful attempts to recover, he was put on the market as sire prospect.

Needs Further (Encosta De Lago – Crowned Glory by Danehill) is by the same sire as fellow Gooree Stud colt Northern Meteor who is going great guns with his first crop of two year-olds this season.

His dam Crowned Glory was hailed the winner of the 2000 Golden Slipper Stakes before Belle du Jour jumped out of the ground to deny her by a half-head.

“We have been on the lookout for a replacement for Savoire Vivre and have been conscious that the market demands precocious types.,” Armidale Stud’s David Whishaw said.  “ We have been offered a number of potential stallions in the past 12 months but this is the only horse that really got us excited.

“Needs Further quite obviously had tons of ability, plus he has a brilliant pedigree, and is a lovely big strong horse with loads of presence.  If he throws foals like himself, they will be standouts in the sale ring.”

Armidale will stand Needs Further for an initial service fee of $3,300 (inc gst).
