More Than Ready is renowned as a champion sire of juveniles and now he’s in the winning groove as a broodmare sire of two year-olds.
The Vinery champion is the damsire of brilliant filly Kauai Katie who set Saratoga alight on Friday. The debutante romped home by 12 lengths on opening day of the Spa’s summer meeting.
Kauai Katie (2f Malibu Moon – More Than Pretty by More Than Ready) blundered the start but mustered speed to lead and, despite being geared down in the final stages, clocked a slick 63.66s for 1100m. “We knew she was quick and she was able to overcome that little bit of a stumble,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “She’s bred to be precocious and we won’t rule out anything after that.”
Kauai Katie is raced by Stonestreet Stables who won the same two year-old race at Saratoga last year with My Miss Aurelia. A daughter of Smart Strike, she went on to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Stonestreet purchased Kauai Katie for $490,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida 2YO Sale earlier this year. Her older sister Winding Way broke her maiden impressively at Hollywood Park last month.
Their dam More Than Pretty has been a regular visitor to Malibu Moon (A P Indy) at Spendthrift Farm. She was a Listed winner of the 2006 Open Mind Stakes at Churchill Downs before retiring to stud.
More Than Ready began shuttling to Vinery in 2001 and there have only been 40 starters from his Aussie bred mares to date. Leading the way are Adelaide filly Comearoundsundown (Not A Single Doubt) and Brisbane filly Amber’s Crown (Excites).
Vinery shuttler Big Brown was also expected to play a hand in the G3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga on Friday. His last-start Churchill Downs winner Brown Eyes Blue settled right on the pace but abruptly dropped out of contention and was eased down by her jockey Shaun Bridgmohan.
