Champion mare Moonlight Cloud, who ran Black Caviar to a head in the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, has left Paris to begin her career as a broodmare for owner – breeder George Strawbridge.
Trainer Freddy Head farewelled the six year-old mare from his Chantilly stables on Wednesday. She will be mated with Galileo at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
Moonlight Cloud (6m Invincible Spirit – Ventura by Spectrum) was last seen finishing a disappointing sixth in the Hong Kong Mile in December. “Monsieur Strawbridge always favoured sending her to stud at this stage and I think he was a little worried that she might not be able to perform quite so brilliantly in the future,” Head said.
“She’s a great mare with a lot of class and is also very gentle and kind. She is really a sweetheart of a horse.”
Moonlight Cloud won a record-equalling three straight editions of Deauville’s G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest (1200m) and also scored at the highest level up to 1600m in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.
She descends from the legendary classic producer Doff The Derby – the dam of Generous and Imagine – while further back, it’s the family of unbeaten Arc heroine Treve.
