Moody updates Musket colt at Yarradale Sale

Musket has 15 second-crop yearlings catalogued for the Yarradale Stud Sale this Sunday (May 19) and his first lot to parade could have an important update 24 hours before the auction.

The Musket – Rossiya colt (Lot 2) is a younger half-brother to the Peter Moody trained Medvedev who has been nominated for the VRC Morrison Hcp (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Moody has always held a high opinion of Medvedev and the gelding holds a nomination for the G1 Queensland Derby on June 8.  The stable may have run out of time for the classic, nevertheless, he’s still a very promising stayer in the making.

Medvedev cost $55,000 at the 2011 Sydney Easter Session 2 yearling sale and his new owners knocked back a much better offer from Hong Kong before he had even raced!  That decision paid dividends when he won on debut at Seymour last November and then bolted in by four lengths at Benalla a month later.

“Just a very impressive win,” Moody said after Medvedev defeated older horses shouldering 58kg just before Christmas.  “He raced in behind them and gained confidence from running past horses easily.  That’s what he needed to do to develop into the middle distance horse we would like him to be.”

At his first run back from a spell in April, Medvedev pulled up sore in the near foreleg at Caulfield and second-up he struck interference in the straight at Flemington.

Moody steps Medvedev up to 1600 metres at headquarters this Saturday and a forward run might tempt connections to make a late bid for the G1 Queensland Derby.  Moody won it last year with Brambles.

Musket (Redoute’s Choice) stands at Yarradale and he was Group 2 winner of the STC Shannon Stakes at Rosehill.  He’s bred in the purple being a three-quarter brother to Melbourne Cup legend Makybe Diva.

Rosehill based youngster Rutherglen opened his winning account as a sire in February.  Musket’s only other first-crop starter has been Danehill Native who finished fifth at his sole start at Eagle Farm earlier this season.
