Angel Of Mercy continued the winning run of Hussonet three year-olds on the final day of the Randwick autumn carnival.
The Gerald Ryan trained filly powered home to score a narrow victory over Bound To Blush (Strategic) and Hallowell Belle (Starcraft) in the LR James H B Carr Stakes (1400m).
Angel Of Mercy (3f Hussonet – Pieta by Clay Hero) was a $180,000 buy for Ryan from the Mill Park draft at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions. She is raced by Scenic Blast’s owner Elio Galante and her dam is a winning half sister to G1 winning mare Divine Madonna.
Ryan produced the Hussonet filly to win a New Year maiden at Warwick Farm before she earned black-type when beaten in a three-way finish with Shopaholic and Mosheen in the G3 Vanity Stakes at Flemington.
Hussonet stands at Cornerstone Stud by arrangement with Arrowfield Stud and he is enjoying another high-profile season with his three year-olds. They include NZ South Island star Bangalore Bullet as well as the Australian black-type gallopers Gioe, Happy Hussy, Colorado Claire and Red Dress Marley.
Angel Of Mercy will now head to the Brisbane winter carnival. “She’s screaming out for longer distances and her pedigree suggests the Queensland Oaks,” Ryan said. “She’s a nice filly with plenty of upside.
“She’s been in work a long time but we’ve been spacing her runs. If she doesn’t make it to the Queensland Oaks, I might freshen her up for the Winter Stakes.”
Hussonet (USA) has sired more Group 1 winners that any other active stallion based in Australia. Angel Of Mercy will take his tally in that category to 29 if she wins the Queensland Oaks or Winter Stakes.
Cornerstone Stud owner Sam Hayes will stand Hussonet for $25,000 in 2012.
