Strawberry Boy could hardly have put up a better performance in his first time out from the Peter Moody stable than his quality win at Flemington on Saturday.
The resolute manner of his victory was impressive enough, but his time of 1.21.85 for the $80,000 1400-metre event indicated that John Singleton’s home-bred son of Redoute’s Choice is ready to build on the G3 placings he achieved over longer distances in Sydney last spring.
Singleton transferred Strawberry Boy from the Gai Waterhouse stable long before his latest falling out with the champion trainer after the gelding had shown promise in Sydney.
“He didn’t do himself any favours early, he was just a bit too fresh with the blinkers on, so he’ll improve with that,” Moody Racing’s stable manager Jeff O’Connor said, “We might see a more relaxed horse next time and he’ll be a better horse.”
A Brisbane campaign remains on the cards for the 4YO son of Strawberry Girl, already dam of three stakes winners including Group 2 winner Danroad.
Strawberry Boy (4g Redoute’s Choice – Strawberry Girl by Strawberry Road) has now won 5 of his 8 starts and more than $200,000 and is a fine chance to join the 19 stakes winners already posted by Redoute’s Choice around the world this season.
Redoute’s Choice will stand at a fee of $137,500 (inc gst) at Arrowfield Stud in 2013.
