Mawingo retires to Larneuk Stud

Larneuk Stud has announced Group 1 Doomben Cup winner Mawingo will stand his first season at its Euroa property this year.

The German-bred stallion was retired after sustaining a hairline sesamoid fracture in training earlier this year.

Studmaster Nev Murdoch will stand him alongside O’Lonhro (Lonhro) and Ilovethiscity (Magic Albert) for a $5,500 (inc gst) service fee.

Mawingo (6h Tertullian – Montfleur by Sadler’s Wells) was initially trained by Jens Hirschberger for a Group 3 victory in the Bavarian Classic (2000m) at Munich in May 2011.  He also finished an excellent fourth in that year’s G1 German Derby (2400m).

Transferred to Anthony Freedman, he was a fighting Group 1 winner of the 2012 Doomben Cup defeating Group 1 winners Lights Of Heaven and Manighar.

Resuming for the 2013 Melbourne autumn carnival, he produced another top performance when narrowly defeated by explosive sprinter-miler All Too Hard in the G1 C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield.

Mawingo was Australia’s lone representative in the best field ever assembled for last year’s G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup and his class was evident with a slashing third to Hong Kong star Rave while finishing ahead of world class gallopers Pastorius and Red Cadeaux.

His sire Tertullian (Miswaki) has been represented by 94 stakes winners and boasts a sky high 75% winners-to-runners strike-rate.

His dam Montfleur (by Sadler’s Wells) is a half-sister to multiple Group winners Mr Mellon (Red Ransom) and Seeking the Best (Seeking the Gold) and stakes placed Danebury Hill (Danehill) and Beaucette (Mr. Prospector).

Second-dam Makie is half-sister by A.P. Indy’s half-brother Summer Squall to four major stakes performers, including Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero and Group 2 winner Wild Applause, grand-dam of Vinery shuttler Congrats.

Growing Tribute, the Ireland bred third dam of Congrats and Mawingo, and also grand-dam of Mozart, an Ireland bred champion sprinter by Danehill, was by Ribot sire Graustark and from Admiring, a stakes winning sister by Hail to Reason to world champion racemare Allez France and to American Horse of the Year Personality.
