Lomar Park set the Gold Coast Magic Millions alight on Thursday with a Fastnet Rock colt that eclipsed every other lot on Day 2.
The Fastnet Rock – Smart Company colt was purchased by Coolmore Stud for $1.35 million after strong opposition from several prospective buyers including agent James Harron. Next best on the leader-board was a Street Cry colt that made $550,000.
Lomar Park owner Fred Peisah also sold a Fastnet Rock – My Lady’s Chamber colt that was third-best on the Wednesday leader-board at $460,000. Both colts descend from Peisah’s foundation mare Social Smile and both of them will be trained by Gai Waterhouse.
“I bought Social Smile in 1967,” Peisah recalled. “She was no more than 14.3 hands but has been at the cornerstone of our success for over 40 years.”
Peisah and Lomar Park studmaster Paul Davies were all smiles at the back of Barn Z after their colt became the first yearling to make seven-figures at this year’s Gold Coast Sale. “He’s by the right sire and this is the right time to be selling a Fastnet Rock,” Peisah explained. “Coolmore are searching for stallion prospects by Fastnet Rock and hopefully they’ve found one today.”
The $1.35 million colt is from Smart Company (Mister C) and is a half-brother to Lindsay Park filly Divine Choice (Rock of Gibraltar) who was runner-up in the 2009 VRC Maribyrnong Trial Stakes. Their dam is a sister to the Lomar Park bred stars Super Elegant (G1 Doomben 10,000), Elegancy (G2 SAJC Angus Brut Classic) and Mister Elegant (G3 VATC Victoria Hcp).
Peisah has another five yearlings still to go under the hammer at the Magic Millions including an Encosta de Lago filly (Lot 842) on Sunday. She hails from the same family as Lomar Park’s Fastnet Rock colts and is tipped to be one of the stars of Session 5.
