Magic Millions and Perth Racing have signed off on a new auction site for the WA yearling sales. A new sales complex will be built at Ascot racecourse and will begin operating in 2014.
Perth’s yearling sales have been held at Belmont Park since they transferred from Claremont Showground in 1972. The new site is located at the west end of Ascot adjacent to the home turn.
Magic Millions WA manager Murray Tillett said company executives discussed the Ascot proposal before Sunday’s final session of the Gold Coast yearling sale.
“The 2013 Perth Yearling Sale will be the last at Belmont,” Tillett told WA newspaper journalist Ernie Manning. “An agreements has been reached with Perth Racing giving us the all-clear for the Ascot sales complex to be launched.
“Perth Racing vice-chairman Lex Piper and track general-manager Geoff Murphy are playing key roles in helping us get the project under way. Submissions will be lodged with the Swan River Trust seeking approval to begin construction work. Then it should be all systems go.
“The project will be underwritten by Magic Millions owner Gerry Harvey. The sales centre will be a multi-purpose venue with all-year use.”
