Lyuba comes up trumps for Turffontein

In-form stallion Turffontein landed a rapid-fire treble for Blue Gum Farm on the weekend.

Darren Weir prepared Turf Talk to a Cranbourne victory at 10pm on Friday night and the champion conditioner was back in town to win with stablemate Lyuba at Moonee Valley at 2pm on Saturday.

Cranbourne owner-trainer Rachael Cunningham filled out the Turffontein three-timer with Gautang Girl a couple of hours later at Yarra Valley.

Lyuba appears to have the most upside of the trio and was a confidently backed $2.40 favourite first-up in the MSC Signs Hcp (1000m).  She had stamped herself above-average with a hat-trick in the autumn before losing an unbeaten record when runner-up to subsequent Group 1 winner Abbey Marie at Caulfield in April.

“She has that same keen racing pattern as last time and settled into a lovely rhythm with cover today,” apprentice Ben Allen noted.  “She strode out and, to her credit, topped it off with a big finish.”

Lyuba (4m Turffontein – Dancing With Amy by General Nediym) made a mere $2,000 at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale.  Bred at Liverpool Farm in Strathbogie by Paul Aspros and Susan Keating, she has now earned $135,400 in prizemoney and VOBIS Gold bonuses.

Aspros bred Friday night’s Cranbourne VOBIS winner Fudged (Casino Prince) and has entered her yearling sister for the 2017 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.

Turffontein also anchored a winning weekend for Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm with Gautang Girl on Saturday.  She led home a quinella for the Corinella-based nursery ahead of Velonski (Falvelon) at Yarra Valley.

Lauriston-bred Cosmic Kheleyf won at Pt Lincoln on Friday for trainer Scott Trenowden.  He broke through at Morphettville soon after arriving in South Australia and has added another four wins since moving to the Eyre Peninsula earlier this year.

Turffontein (Johannesburg) stands at Blue Gum Farm for an $11,000 (inc gst) service fee.
