Patinack Farm champion Casino Prince kick-started his second season with front-running winner Longport in the Australian Turf Club Hcp (1400m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
Longport (3f Casino Prince – Ocean Bridge by Dolphin Street) had helped her sire claim the 2011-12 Australian freshman title with a win on the last day of the season at Kembla Grange. She completed a running double with a brave short-head, half-head victory over Sherocksmyworld (Fastnet Rock) and Chez Harmony (Choisir).
“It was a big step up to Saturday class but she fought on strongly,” trainer John Thompson said. “She’s improving with every start and will be even better once blinkers go on.”
Longport is a younger half-sister to Run For Wilson (Shamardal) who won the Listed AJC Breeders’ Plate in Patinack’s colours. Their dam won three races in Melbourne and was also fourth home in the G1 Oakleigh Plate won by River Dove in 2003.
Casino Prince won the Australian first-season title with 8 winners of 14 races for earnings of $730,960. Outstanding colt All Too Hard was instrumental in the title victory after G2 wins in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and ATC Pago Pago Stakes.
Casino Prince (Flying Spur) will stand for a $27,500 fee at Patinack Farm in 2012.
