Lloyd Williams lands first Caulfield Cup

Fawkner’s home-town victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup was a triumph for owner Lloyd Williams and his team at Macedon Lodge.

Williams raced Fawkner’s sire to Reset (Zabeel) before selling him to Sheikh Mohammed.  In an unbeaten career, Reset won the G1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield before retiring to Darley’s Northwood Park property at Seymour.

Fawkner (6g Reset – Dane Belltar by Danewin) is the third Group 1 winner by his sire following Rebel Raider (Victoria Derby) and Pinker Pinker (W S Cox Plate).  Overall, Reset has sired 24 stakes winners, however, his stud career has been stymied by below-par fertility rates.

“We had an offer from Perth after Fawkner finished second in last year’s Emirates Stakes but it fell through,” Lloyd’s son Nick recalled.  “Dad was glad – he said we’re going to win the Caulfield Cup with this horse.”

Lloyd Williams has won four Melbourne Cups but Fawkner is his first in the Caulfield Cup.  The grey was bred by Steve Bennetts and is a younger half-brother to stablemate Tanby (Galileo) who won the G2 Zipping Classic last year.  He made $70,000 at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.

Their dam Dane Belltar has a yearling filly by Starcraft and she foaled a New Approach filly on September 7.  The mare was tested in foal to Street Cry last week.

Reset stands for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee at Northwood Park.
